The story of the Homemakers United Foundation

History, goals and missions of the Organization

At the end of 1986, the first five or six people launched the idea in a dialogue on "women should also participate in public affairs" in Taipei City. On January 6, 1987, more than 30 people gathered together and took on a commitment to "walking out of the kitchen and joining in the society, and made a vow to become a Taiwanese citizen who "has the courage to speak up, acts swiftly, and is willing to take on responsibility" from now on. The "Homemakers United Foundation" was therefore established.

In the 1980s, the Taiwanese democracy movement was like the single spark that started the prairie fire, and economic development prevailed over everything else. Nevertheless, it seemed that as the society was in stricter control under the martial law, it ended up with being even "wilder". That was a turning point where people's minds were seeking changes and the form of government system was shifting.

This group of homemakers, who were neither social elites nor scholars and experts, simply lived a purely practical life on this land, realized profoundly the importance of the ecological environment. From actions of protests against the pollution of the LCY chemical plant in Hsinchu, the establishment of the DuPont plant in Lugang, the construction of the No. 4 nuclear power plant, and other incidents, they inspired the citizens awareness of caring for environmental and social issues, and made people understand that wrong policies would sacrifice land and peoples health. Thereafter, this group of homemakers more actively promoted garbage sorting, recycling, bringing their own tableware and shopping bags, kitchen waste composting, and rejection of synthetic cleaning solutions.

For the past 35 years, the "Homemakers United Foundation" has maintained its original intention, and advocated environmental protection in everyday life, green consumption, safe diet, and non-nuclear homes. Through organizational forces, we supervise the government to formulate policies; through social education, we call on people to protect the environment and sustain ecology. Although the resources have been limited along the way, our belief has been firm with unremitting efforts and the spirit of practicability and dependability. Even until recent years, this group of homemakers has not been absent all along in actions against incidents such as Kuokuang petrochemical project, improper farmland expropriation, and anti-nuclear, refusal to lift the ban on lean meat, as well
